Outline and Purpose of the Course This course provides an overview of the role of plants, mainly forests, in energy and environmental issues, and discusses various biomass resources and their use as bioenergy and bio-chemicals.
Course Goals To understand the role of plants in energy and environmental issues, and to understand the types and characteristics of biomass resources and their conversion methods for utilization as energy and chemicals.

2. Role of forest in carbon cycle on earth (1 week)
3. Types of biomass, tissue structure, chemical composition (1 week)
4. Solid biofuel (3 weeks)
 4-1. Fuel characteristics of biomass, unused wood, biomass power generation
 4-2. Pellets
 4-3. Charcoal, torrefaction, carbon sequestration
5. liquid biofuel (4 weeks)
 5-1. bioethanol
 5-2. biodiesel
6. Gaseous fuel (biomethane) (1 week)
7. Bioplastics, biochemicals (1 week)
8. Future energy/chemical utilization technologies (3 weeks)
 8-1. Bio-oil and chemicals production by fast pyrolysis
 8-2. Gasification for power generation and petroleum synthesis
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on assignment (85%) and class performance (15%).
