Outline and Purpose of the Course The aim of this course is to help students acquire an understanding of aqueous processing of production and recycling for functional materials based on physical chemistry. The course deals with electrochemistry and thermodynamics of aqueous phases, and conductivity of electrolyte solutions.
Course Goals 1. To understand the basis of fundamental electrochemistry and thermodynamics of aqueous phases.
2. To understand potential-pH diagrams and potential-pL diagrams.
3. To draw up potential-pH diagrams and potential-pL diagrams using thermodynamic data.
4. To understand conductivity of electrolyte solutions and mobility of ions.
5. To be able to explain electrochemical processes based on physical chemistry.
Schedule and Contents . In principal, the course will be offered as the following plan. However, it may change the order or the number of times for each theme depending on the progressive of the course or handling on current topics.
1. Fundamentals in electrochemistry and thermodynamics (3-4 weeks)
2. Equilibrium in aqueous solutions and electrochemistry(6-7 weeks)
3. Conductivity of electrolyte solutions (2-3weeks)
4. Electrochemical processes (2 weeks)
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on quizzes during class and assignments via PandA.
Course Requirements None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students who do not understand lectures are required to study fundamentals in electrochemistry and thermodynamics using reference books.
