Outline and Purpose of the Course This course will introduce numerical methods based on thermochemistry. Students will learn application of thermochemistry to pyro-metallurgy.
Course Goals The goals of the course are for students to understand how to calculate thermochemical properties by using data sheets.
Schedule and Contents The course will consist of lectures and presentations.
(1) Fundamentals of thermochemistry (1 week by Hasegawa)
(2) Thermochemical data on pure substances (1 week by Hasegawa)
Enthalpy, Entropy, Gibbs free energy
Boiling point
Vapor pressure of metals
(3) Thermochemical data on alloys (2 weeks by Hasegawa)
Gibbs free energy of mixing
Excess free energy of mixing
Phase diagram
Calculated phase diagram
(4) Phase stability diagram and Ellingham diagram (3 weeks by Hasegawa)
(5) Thermochemical calculations on the iron-making process(7回)
Evaluation Methods and Policy By class participation (40%), reports (30%) and presentation (30%).
Note: Submission of report requires class participation
