Outline and Purpose of the Course In the 21st century, societal structures and production and distribution of goods, information, and knowledge have undergone massive transformations. In this ever increasingly complex and fluid society, technology and knowledge can quickly become obsolete. Present society urgently requires innovation and evolution in the higher educational system so that individuals can secure a base of knowledge, technical skills, and job skills that will actually be useful to them. This seminar examines higher education in knowledge-based societies from a global perspective, to search for and investigate guidelines and policies for building higher education systems that can solve various problems facing societies and universities.
Course Goals 1. Understand basic concepts, real-world examples, possibilities, and issues relating to contemporary higher education systems
2. Use previous research and real-world examples to analyze issues in contemporary higher education systems and specify their causes
3. Individually and in groups, investigate and discuss various policies and methods to address these issues, summarize and present the results, and mutually evaluate one another’s work
Schedule and Contents The main themes covered by this course are “roles and functions of university education as required by modern society,” “globalization, liberalization, and opening of higher education,” “educational networks and communities,” “education innovation and reform of educational systems and culture,” “lifelong learning and the future of higher education systems,” and “Japanese universities and the development of global/local education” (two classes on each topic). Classes will be made up of lectures, group discussions based on review and critical analysis of real-world examples, literature, data, presentations by students, etc.
Evaluation Methods and Policy 【Grading Method】 Holistic evaluation based on class participation (30%), contribution to discussions and group projects (30%), presentations and papers (40%)
【Grading Policy】 Students will be evaluated based on achievement of goals under the Graduate School of Education grading policy.
Course Requirements Students should have general knowledge of and enthusiasm for university education and education studies.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Use PandA to prepare for and review each class, for discussion outside of class, for peer reviewing one other’s assignments, etc.
