Outline and Purpose of the Course This course comprises the following three elements.

(1) Reading basic literature on curriculum theory, teaching/learning theory, evaluation/assessment theory, university student theory, FD (faculty development) theory, education system theory, and other themes in higher education.
(2) Introduction to the current state of higher education in Japan and globally by instructors from the Center for the Promotion of Excellence in Higher Education and consideration of the issues from multiple angles.
(3) Approaching various themes in higher education from the viewpoint of one’s own special/expert interest, and conducting research presentations.
Course Goals ・Touch on research and domestic/international education methods in the field of higher education, and gain a general overview of the field
・Be able to appropriately summarize, explain, and discuss research plans and the progress of one’s thesis (master’s thesis, dissertation)
Schedule and Contents Week 1: Orientation (domestic and international trends in higher education)
Week 2-8: Presentation of literature on curriculum theory, teaching/learning theory, evaluation/assessment theory, university student theory, FD theory, education systems theory, etc.
Week 9-14: Research presentations
Week 15: Feedback

Each class, one student will present literature on domestic and international higher education research or will present on his/her own research. Presentations will be discussed among the whole class. The number and schedule of literature presentations and research presentations is subject to change based on the number of students enrolled in the class.
Evaluation Methods and Policy 【Grading Method】
Students will be evaluated by consensus of all instructors for their presentations (at least one per semester) (20%) and final paper (summary of the progress of the student’s own research) (80%)

【Grading Policy】
Students will be evaluated based on achievement goals under the Graduate School of Education grading policy.
Course Requirements Though the textbook is not used in this class, for background knowledge, students should read and review Fostering Higher Education (Nakanishiya Publishing, 2012), published by the Kyoto University Center for the Promotion of Excellence in Higher Education. Students enrolled in this course should also enroll in the second semester course “Studies on Higher Education B.”
