Outline and Purpose of the Course Psychological research depends on method of psychological measurement, assigning numbers to invisible mental functions. These methods of measurement include questionnaire, test, and experiment. In most cases of studies, statistical data processing is required to deal with obtained data. In this course, students will learn bases of these statistical processing as well as experience some experiments, tests, and questionnaires. It is encouraged to learn that an appropriate statistical method should be chosen based on a study design. The primary emphasis will be on understanding principles of statistical methods, but how to use them should be also acquired for basic statistics. The use of numerical formulas will be minimum, but the use of the summation symbol Σ will be necessary.
Course Goals 1) Understand what is a questionnaire, test, and experiment in psychology
2) Understand and use mean and standard deviation
3) Understand correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis
4) Understand and use t-statistics, F-statistics, and χ2-statistics.
Schedule and Contents 1) Significance of statistical methods for psychological measurement:
Experiment, independent and dependent variables, descriptive and inferential statistics
2) Four levels of measurement: Nominal, ordinal, interval, proportional
3) Measures of central tendency and degree of dispersion: Mean, median, range, variance, standard deviation
4) Normal distribution and measures of relative position: Frequency distribution, normal distribution, z-socre, standard normal distribution
5) Linear correlation: Pearson's correlation coefficient
6) Population and sample: Introduction to inferential statistics, standard error
7) Principle of statistical testing
8) Testing a difference between two means: t-test (unrelated and related)
9) Interim exam
10) Introduction to Analysis of Variance (testing differences among means more than two)
11) Analysis of Variance and experimental design
12) Various types of Analysis of Variance
13) Chi-square test: Introduction to non-parametric statistics
14) Psychological test and questionnaire
15) Multiple regression analysis
Evaluation Methods and Policy 35% interim exam, 35% final report, and 30% answers to questions in classroom.
Evaluated according to directions of Graduate School of Education.
