Outline and Purpose of the Course This course will deepen students’ understanding of specialized fields through reading and translation of English-language publications on higher education research, aiming to improve students’ basic skills in reading and understanding academic literature. We will use literature related to students’ own research themes as a starting point. We will then branch out into a wide range of related literature to investigate the positioning of students’ own themes within higher education research. The course instructor will offer individual advice to each student on determining which publications to read.
Course Goals ・Be able to conduct close readings of English-language publications related to higher education research while positioning these publications in relation to one’s own research
・Be able to appropriately summarize, explain, and discuss the content of one’s selected publications while positioning these publications in relation to one’s own research
Schedule and Contents Class 1:Orientation
Assess the number of students and their preparedness through discussion with them. Decide the number of presentations each student should make and which literature each student will present on.

Classes 2-14: Student presentations/discussion
Presentations and Q&A sessions according to the presentation schedule. May include lectures by the presiding instructor as needed.

Class 15:Feedback
Feedback to be provided as needed through PandA, etc.
Evaluation Methods and Policy 【Grading Method】Evaluation based on presentation, participation in class discussion, and consultation with instructor (presentation 70%, discussion participation 30%)
【Grading Policy】Students will be evaluated based on achievement goals under the Graduate School of Education grading policy.
Course Requirements Students should have read a minimum of one English-language publication on their chosen research theme.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) ・Advanced critical reading of the assigned presenter’s summary (assignments must be submitted to PandA)
・Careful preparation of one’s own presentation content
