| Outline and Purpose of the Course | The aim of this class is to improve students’ English-language research presentation skills in the areas of psychology and cognitive science. These include creating presentations, writing abstracts to be presented at academic conferences, and holding academic discussions in English. The sessions will come in the form of seminars, which will be conducted in English. Students will be asked to conduct actual presentations, either verbally or through a poster. The seminars seek to improve the ability of non-native English speakers to present research about psychology and cognitive science. | |||

| Schedule and Contents |
First session: Introduction Overview of how the class will be conducted and self-introduction by participating students in English. The timetable for presentations by the participating students will also be decided. Second to fourteenth session: Presentations and discussions Presentation of research content in English by participating students (i.e., verbally or via poster), discussion in English, opportunity to hear a research presentation by a foreign guest speaker, and participation in a question and answer session Fifteenth session: Summary A review of improvement in proficiency in research presentation in English and a discussion on supplementary learning will be done after the sessions are finished. |

| Evaluation Methods and Policy |
【Evaluation method】 Evaluation is based on class attendance, presentation in English, and participation in English during the question and answer sessions after other students' presentations [Heijouten (score for participation): 100%]. 【Evaluation guidelines】 Achievement of attainment targets is evaluated according to the Graduate School of Education's evaluation guidelines. |

| Course Requirements | Students must have experience in reading English-language journal articles about empirical research in the fields of psychology and cognitive science as well as basic knowledge of the format of papers on experiments in the said fields. Advanced English proficiency is not necessary. The class is designed to allow students who have poor English conversation skills or are beginners in writing and presenting English papers to actively participate and build up their experience. | |||
| Study outside of Class (preparation and review) |
Students should maximize their exposure to English. Regularly scanning English-language journal abstracts on topics that they find interesting is a good way to do this. Students are also encouraged to actively interact with foreign students and attend lectures by visiting researchers and communicate with them. In addition, students should view high-quality online presentations in English (e.g., TED Talks). |
