Outline and Purpose of the Course Topics in vision sciences will be discussed on the basis of psychophysics and neuroscience. The primary aim is to learn the basic theoretical and methodological issues in vision sciences so that the students will be able to utilise them in their own studies.
This year, a classic masterpiece by Brian Wandell in 1990's, which is now freely available;e online, will be read and discussed, with some lectures on related topics. Japanese language is used for reading and discussion.
Course Goals To learn the basic knowledge and skills that are required in understanding recent topics in vision science and also in conducting their own experiments.
Schedule and Contents Week 1 Lecture on "Introduction to Image Encoding"
Week 2-15 Attendee will read and present each chapter.
Chapter 2: Image Formation
Chapter 3: The Photoreceptor Mosaic
Chapter 4: Wavelength Encoding
Chapter 5: The Retinal Representation
Chapter 6: The Cortical Representation
Chapter 7: Pattern Sensitivity
Chapter 8: Multiresolution Image Representations
Chapter 9: Color
Chapter 10: Motion and Depth
Chapter 11: Seeing

We will read each chapter in one or two weeks, but it depends. We could slow down or skip some chapters after discussing with students.

The way of feedback will be explained during the lecture.
Evaluation Methods and Policy The student's own presentation, plus participation in discussion will be evaluated.
Course Requirements Basic knowledge in experimental psychology (or other related areas such as neuroscience) will be required.
Advanced skill in Japanese language for intensive scientific discussion is required.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Each student read the textbook for presentation before the lecture. If necessary, they may need to search for materials for further understanding and/or rebutting after the lecture.
