Instructor name OGATA NAOYUKI (Part-time Lecturer)
Outline and Purpose of the Course Although the concept of “active learning” originated mainly in higher education, in Japan it is now more commonly discussed in the context of primary and intermediate education. Instructors in higher education are less familiar with systems for gaining and improving pedagogical content knowledge than instructors in primary and intermediate education. In this practical seminar, we will become aware of this problem and lay out learning theories for the learning sciences. Then, through group discussion, we will deepen our understanding of teaching methods developed based on each theory. We will further deepen our understanding with discussions of learning environment designs that are effective and implementable in contemporary higher education.
Course Goals 1) Gain an appropriate understanding of the three metaphors used in learning theory (acquisition, participation, and knowledge creation)
2) Understand the process and effects of the teaching methods developed from those metaphors
3) Deepen practical understanding through higher education study environments designed to be implementable and effective
Schedule and Contents This intensive three-day course will be based on close readings of the literature and on debate. Each student will create a study portfolio on the CSCL system (Knowledge Forum). Therefore, students must bring their own network-access-capable notebook computers with them to this seminar.
Day 1 (Units 1-5)
Students will gain a basic understanding of the learning sciences and then deepen their understanding through discussion of the “acquisition metaphor” as a learning science and teaching methods based on it.
Day 2 (Units 6-10)
Students will deepen their understanding through discussion of the “participation metaphor” and the "knowledge creation metaphor" as learning sciences and the development of teaching methods based on them.
Day 3 (Units 11-15)
The class will read papers on evaluation methods based on each of these learning sciences and understand the differences between them. Next, students will deepen their understanding through practical investigation of problem-driven learning lecture designs that are implementable in higher education.
