Outline and Purpose of the Course | The first and second halves of this Master's Thesis Workshop will provide direction and coaching for writing a master's thesis in economics. The objective of the second half of the workshop is for each student to conduct the analysis and research for and complete a master's thesis. Master's Thesis Workshop 2a is targeted at students who are writing a master's thesis primarily in microeconomics (theory or application) or in econometrics. | |||
Course Goals | The goal is for the student to create an academically advanced master's thesis (in the sense that it makes some type of contribution or discovery). Additionally, during the process of writing the thesis, students should establish their own research tasks and acquire both the ability to engage with their subject independently and on a continuous basis and the ability to explain their own research clearly to instructors and other students. | |||
Schedule and Contents | Creating a master's thesis. _x005F_x000D_ _x005F_x000D_ 1. Conducting the analysis and research required to conclude the student's research proposal. (6 weeks, with Item 2) _x005F_x000D_ 2. Revising the student's research proposal as needed. _x005F_x000D_ 3. Writing each section of the master's thesis other than the first section (Introduction). (4 weeks) _x005F_x000D_ 4. Writing the first and final sections of the master's thesis. (1 week) _x005F_x000D_ 5. Editing and proofreading the master's thesis. (1 week) _x005F_x000D_ 6. Final report on and review of the master's thesis. (2 weeks) _x005F_x000D_ 7. Conclusion and feedback. (1 week) _x005F_x000D_ _x005F_x000D_ Items 1 and 3 each require at least one interim report. The final report and review of the master's thesis in Item 6 requires the judgment of two instructors in the above workshop and one member of the external review committee for a total of three participants. | |||
Evaluation Methods and Policy | Students will be graded on their interim reports and discussion during the workshop, on their final report at the end of term, and on their master's thesis. | |||

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) | Students should read numerous papers related to their own research and endeavor to understand the content. | |||
