| Outline and Purpose of the Course | The first and second halves of this Master's Thesis Workshop will provide direction and coaching for writing a master's thesis in economics. The objective of the first half of the workshop is for each student to write (in Japanese or English) a research proposal for a master's thesis. Master's Thesis Workshop 1b is targeted at students who are writing a master's thesis primarily in macroeconomics (theory, empirical study, or numerical simulation) or in finance (theory or empirical study). | |||
| Course Goals |
The goals of a student's research proposal should generally consist of the following items: 1. An explanation of the research objective and methods. This explanation should include the academic background of the research, the academic questions that compose the core of the topic under consideration, the objectives of the research and their academic originality, the data and analytical methods used in the research, the specific research goals to be attained (what will be clarified and to what extent), related research trends both in Japan and overseas, and more. 2. An explanation of the structure of the master's thesis, section by section. 3. A listing of the works cited and the position of the master's thesis. Additionally, during the process of creating the research proposal, students should set their own research tasks and acquire both the ability to engage with their subject independently and on a continuous basis and the ability to explain their own research clearly to instructors and other students. |

| Schedule and Contents |
Creating a research proposal for a master's thesis: 1. Introduction; Reviewing research integrity and research ethics (1 week) 2. Explaining the structure of academic papers (1 week) 3. Establishing a research subject (4 weeks) 4. Conducting a survey of prior research and revising the student's research topic (8 weeks) 5. Feedback Item 3 requires at least one presentation; Item 4 requires at least two presentations. The content of the class may change depending on the course progress and the demands of the participants. |

| Evaluation Methods and Policy | Students will be graded on their reports and discussion during the workshop (30%) and on the research proposal they submit at the end of the term (70%). | |||
| Course Requirements | None in particular. However, class size may be restricted depending on the number of applicants. Applicants should have a sufficient understanding of the major's core subjects, such as macroeconomics, finance, and econometrics. | |||
