Outline and Purpose of the Course The first and second halves of this Master's Thesis Workshop will provide direction and coaching for writing a master's thesis in economics. The objective of the first half of the workshop is for each student to write (in Japanese or English) a research proposal for a master's thesis. Master's Thesis Workshop 1a is targeted at students who are writing a master's thesis primarily in microeconomics (theory or application) or in econometrics.
Course Goals The goals of a student's research proposal should generally consist of the following items: _x005F_x000D_ _x005F_x000D_ 1. An explanation of the research objective and methods. This explanation should include the academic background for the research, the academic questions that compose the core of the topic under consideration, the objectives of the research and their academic originality, the data used and analytical methods used in the research, the specific research goals to be attained (what will be clarified and to what extent), related research trends both in Japan and overseas, and more. _x005F_x000D_ 2. An explanation of the structure of the master's thesis, section by section. _x005F_x000D_ 3. A listing of the works cited and the position of the master's thesis._x005F_x000D_ _x005F_x000D_ Additionally, during the process of creating the research proposal, students should establish their own research tasks and acquire both the ability to engage with their subject independently and on a continuous basis and the ability to explain their own research clearly to instructors and other students.
Schedule and Contents Creating a research proposal for a master's thesis: _x005F_x000D_ _x005F_x000D_ 1. Reviewing research integrity and research theory. (1 week) _x005F_x000D_ 2. Explaining the structure of the student's treatise. (1 week) _x005F_x000D_ 3. Establishing a research subject and academic questions. (8 weeks, together with 4) _x005F_x000D_ 4. Collecting & understanding references and economic data. _x005F_x000D_ 5. Creating a master's thesis research proposal. (4 weeks). _x005F_x000D_ 6. Conclusion & feedback. (1 week) _x005F_x000D_ _x005F_x000D_ Items 3, 4, and 5 each require at least one interim report.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Students will be graded on their reports and discussion during the workshop and on the research proposal they submit at the end of the term.
Course Requirements None in particular. However, class size may be restricted depending on the number of applicants. Applicants should have a sufficient understanding of the major's core subjects, such as macroeconomics, finance, and econometrics.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students should read numerous papers related to their own research and endeavor to understand the content.
