Outline and Purpose of the Course Current rural planning has received extensive attention from academia around the world. This course aims to introduce the concepts and research methods of rural planning in China from multiple perspectives, analyze rural development patterns and teach rural planning and design methods. The research object is a sample of rural planning in the Yangtze River Delta region in China, including studies from multiple perspectives such as ancient village conservation, rural landscape, rural aesthetics, rural shared space, rural ageing, smart countryside, rural ecological landscape restoration and industrial revitalization.
Course Goals Upon completing this course, students should be able to do the followings:
1.Clearly understand the basic theory and research methods of Chinese rural planning from multiple perspectives.
2.Give examples to illustrate the value of rural planning in research topics of their interest.
3.Understand the basic content of smart villages and the relationship between rural industries and landscapes.
Schedule and Contents Class 1-3: Multi-perspective Rural Planning Theory and Methodology (I)
• Traditional Village Protection and Renewal Perspective: A Study on the Design of Street and Lane Landscape Space Enhancement in Traditional Villages of Southern Anhui.
• Rural Cultural Landscape Planning Perspective: Research on Rural Cultural Landscape Design, A Case Study of Dongshan Island in Suzhou City
• Rural aesthetics perspective: A study on the realistic connotation of rural landscape reputation and the attractiveness of rural tourism landscape in the media era
Class 4-5: Multi-perspective Rural Planning Theory and Methodology (II)
• Rural Landscape Enhancement Perspective: A Study on the Shaping and Enhancement of Rural Landscape in Shanghai Metropolis.
• Perspective of Rural Ageing Countermeasures: Spatially Appropriate Ageing Strategies for Shanghai Rural Streets and Alleys in the Context of Construction Land Reduction Implementation
Class 6-7: Multi-perspective Rural Planning Theory and Methodology (III)
• Rural Reconstruction and Revitalization Perspective: A Study on Rural Ecological Landscape Resilience Restoration and Industrial Revitalization in Coal Mining Subsidence Areas
• Wisdom Rural Development Perspective: Application and Consideration of Artificial Intelligence Technology in Rural Public Service Field.
Class 8: Discussion and Feedback Collection: Review of rural planning models and methods in China
Evaluation Methods and Policy Class grade will be assigned based on 40% class attendance and active participation, 60% on paper assignments and practical exercises.
