Outline and Purpose of the Course The purpose of Japanese river projects and agricultural rural development cooperation in developing countries, and their impact on the water environment are explained, by introducing the examples. Habitat evaluation and fishway development for rare species, Tomiyo, and the development of fishways for freshwater fish around paddy fields are introduced.
Course Goals Students will be able to:
(1)Explain the purpose of river projects and agricultural rural development projects and their impact on the water environment.
(2)Explain the effects of human water use on freshwater fish.
(3)Explain the cruising speed and the burst speed of fish
Schedule and Contents 1. River projects and water environment in Japan
2. Japan's agricultural and rural development cooperation with developing countries and water environment
3. Habitat evaluation of rare species Tomiyo (Nine-spined stickleback)
4. Fishway development for Tomiyo
5. Study on Tomiyo's ascent behaviors
6. Field monitoring of the fishway for Tomiyo
7. Development of fishways for freshwater fish around paddy fields
8. Summary and report writing
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on the report.
