Outline and Purpose of the Course A practical course on discussion of recent researches and related problems of structural function of timber buildings.
Course Goals Develop the ability to design and assess wood-based materials and structure joints using specific methods and techniques.
Schedule and Contents Overview of wood-based structures
In these sessions students will introduce Japanese and international studies on various types and examples of wooden structures, such as homes and large-scale structures using wood-based materials, and discuss the problems associated with such structures.

Characteristics of wood-based materials
In these sessions students will introduce Japanese and international studies related to the basic findings that are essential for understanding the mechanical performance and structural design of various materials used in a wooden structure (e.g., solid wood, laminated wood, LVL, PSL, LSL, and hybrid members), and discuss the problems associated with such materials.
Joint connections in a wooden structure
Students will introduce studies related to the basic findings that are essential for understanding the mechanical performance and structural designs of new joint connection methods in a wooden structure, and discuss the problems associated with such methods.

Roles of structural components in a wooden structure
Students will introduce Japanese and international studies related to the mechanical performance and structural design of structural components constituting a wooden structure, such as bearing walls, roof planes, and floor planes, and discuss the problems associated with such structural components.

Structural design methods and analysis methods for wooden structures
Students will introduce the methods of structural design and analysis for a wooden structure in reference to specific case studies. Topics of discussion will include the parts, joint connection methods, and structural components that are considered desirable in a wooden structure.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on the qualitative and quantitative progress in seminars and presentations at academic conferences.
Course Requirements None.
