Outline and Purpose of the Course To provide understanding in the position of woody biomass, an important subject of biomaterial chemistry, with brief explanation of the basic to applied polysaccharides in woody biomass.
Course Goals Understanding in the fundamental issues in promoting effective utilization of woody biomass.
Schedule and Contents In this lecture, for the following issues, one or two lectures per issue are in plan.

1. Biomass
The current status and future of biomass are outlined.

2. Basics of glycochemistry (structure)
Basic issues on the chemical structure of sugar are explained.

3. Basics of glycochemistry (reaction)
Basic issues on the chemical reactivity of sugar are described.

4. Application of glycochemistry
Chemical processing of wood and pulping reaction are described.
Evaluation Methods and Policy [Grading Procedure]
Grading is evaluated by class performance (attendance and quizzes) (85%) and written assignments on the topics (15%).
