Outline and Purpose of the Course The lecture focuses on the sustainable use of forest resources and ecological services. The lecture will introduce cases in tropical region, especially in Southeast Asia. The topics taught are biodiversity conservation, sustainable forest management, forest and local community, payment for ecosystem services, REDD+, forest certification system, etc. Through lectures and group work of students, students are requested to understand the sustainable way of forest utilization.
Course Goals The target of the subject is to understand biodiversity conservation, sustainable forest management, forest and local community, payment for ecosystem services, REDD+, and forest certification system, and to understand the requirement for the implementation of these mechanism to the real world.
Finally it is requested to integrate the knowledge for the sustainable development of human being.
Schedule and Contents The course will consist of lectures by instructors and group work.

(1) Lectures (4 weeks)
In these lectures we will discuss topics such as: the historical developments of biodiversity conservation, sustainable timber production, local communities and the need to reconcile timber production and conservation, payment mechanisms for ecosystem services, REDD+, and forest certification systems.

(2) Group work (1 weeks)
In groups of 4 or so, students will research recently published reports prepared by international organizations and academic papers on topics of their choice, and identify and analyze the current state and issues.

(3) Presentations (1 weeks)
Each group will present the results of group work and discuss them with the rest of the class. The instructor will provide additional comments, if needed.

(4) Report preparation (1 weeks)
Each student will prepare and submit a report on a selected theme based on the group work.

(5) Feedback (1 week)
The instructor will provide feedback on the reports by email.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on a comprehensive assessment of attendance, contribution to group work, the content of presentation, and the report.

Course Requirements If international students are enrolled in the course lectures, group works, and presentations will all be conducted in English. However, students can choose to write their report in either Japanese or English.
