Outline and Purpose of the Course Marine biological function of various marine organisms including vertebrates, invertebrates, microorganisms and plants are introduced in this course especially focusing on the effective utilization.
Course Goals The objective of this course is to provide students with the principles underlying the methods used for morphological observations and experiments in ecology, cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, and molecular biology. The course will also foster students’ ability to interpret the results obtained from these methods and provide an opportunity to study their research themes from empirical perspectives. In Laboratory Course in Marine Biological Function 2, students will also develop the ability to give an oral presentation to explain the results of their experimental results to an audience in a clear, easy-to-follow manner.
Schedule and Contents  6 weeks of classes are planned for each of the topics covered in this course, including the following:

1. Morphological analysis of marine animals and plants
 Students will learn the techniques used for morphological observations, such as the use of various microscopes for observing microstructures, and study image processing techniques and other various analysis methods.
2. Ecological analysis of marine animals and plants
 Students will collect samples of marine organisms from a variety of ecosystems such as tidal flats, mangrove forests, and deep sea, identify the species of the marine organisms, and learn the relevant statistical analysis methods.
3. Biochemical analysis of marine animals and plants
 Students will learn how to purify and analyze the components of marine animals and plants using various chromatographic techniques and electrophoresis, and study the methods of measuring the activity levels of various enzymes and bioactive compounds.
4. Physiological analysis of marine animals and plants
 By conducting rearing experiments, students will learn how to analyze the impacts of various environmental factors on marine animals and plants from the results of physiological experiments conducted at the organism level.
5. Cell biological analysis of marine animals and plants
 Students will learn how to establish a primary culture system and master cellular-level experimental techniques using established cell lines, and gain proficiency in the experimental techniques used to analyze various functions of marine animals and plants at the cellular level.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on attendance and the quality of presentation.
Course Requirements No background knowledge is required.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) After completing the experiment, review the experimental results until you are able to prepare a logically constructed report and presentation to explain the results to an audience.
