Outline and Purpose of the Course | Plans for collecting, analyzing the forest information are proposed from the viewpoints of natural, social and humanity sciences, in order to establish the sustainable forest conservation and management. Some of them will be conducted.
Course Goals |
By completing this course students will develop the ability to: Understand the methods of handling experiment devices and instruments and the analysis techniques pertaining to the basic experiments for their research topics; Identify the key issues for carrying out their research and develop the means to solve the issues. |
||
Schedule and Contents |
(1) Guidance on the chemical analyses (5 turns) Handling chemicals and instruments, treatments of wastes, preparation of research note and so. Graduate students will select one topic from the following topics from (2) to (5), and conduct 10 turns. Graduate students should consult with their supervisor to select their topics. (2) Experiments on the use and management of the forest resources Basic method using GIS technique will be introduced. Extraction of spatial information and mapping are performed. (3) Evaluation of the forest resource and decision-making Using statistical databases, forest resources and multifunction of the forest environment will be evaluated. Interview and questionnaire will be planed, implemented and analyzed. (4) Field survey in the forested watershed Meteorological and hydrological observation and forest plot survey will be implemented. (5) Sample collection and treatment For biogeochemical survey, sample collection method and sample treatment will be introduced. Sampling plan will be also considered. |
||
Evaluation Methods and Policy |
Grading will be based on an overall assessment of analysis and reports on experiment results, presentations, and Q&A sessions. Refer to 'Guide to Degree Programs' for attainment levels of evaluation. |
||
Course Requirements | Basic and general knowledge of statistical analysis and chemical experimental techniques is desirable.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) | Students are expected to constantly review the key points of experimental methods, as well as the appropriate methods of selecting and cleaning tools and adjusting measurement instruments. Be sure to prepare research notes and record daily entries diligently. Digitize all data as soon as possible and conduct a primary analysis. Verify to see if there is a need to add or revise experiments and research. Develop the habit of preparing a summary in a report, when a certain amount of data is compiled. |
