Outline and Purpose of the Course By the presentation and discussion using research papers of international journals, knowledge about agro-environment and crop production in the tropics is acquired. In addition, students should report their own research subject. Through the discussion, they study research methods on planning, research implementation and writing research papers
Course Goals To master various methodologies related to tropical agriculture, such as ecological survey methods, meteorological and soil measurement methods, cultivation technologies, experimental methods on crop physiology, statistical methods and computer simulation methods,
and to be able to make decision to apply each method to actual analysis.
Schedule and Contents Agricultural production under environmental stresses (4 times)
Plant responses to major environmental stresses, i.e. drought, heat, soil salinization and waterlogging, are discussed.
Distribution and dissemination of tropical crops (4 times)
Recent research methodologies and new knowledge on tropical crops, vegetables, fruit trees and condiments are introduced and discussed.
Farming and cropping systems and sustainable agricultural production (8 times)
Farming and cropping systems of Southeast Asia and tropical Africa are introduced and analyzed and their sustainability and diversity are discussed.
Ecological traits of tropical crops (4 times)
Ecological traits of various tropical crops are discussed based on recent research papers.
Discussion on students' research subjects (10 times)
Planning, implementation and analysis of the thesis are instructed and discussed.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation is made by the record of attendance and the results of assignments.
Course Requirements Students in the Laboratory of Tropical Agriculture can take this course. Basic knowledge on tropical agriculture and stress physiology are necessary.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) It is prerequisite to make enough preparation for surveys and experiments.
It is also necessary to leave written records after surveys and experiments.
