TAKAYANAGI ATSUSHI (Graduate School of Agriculture Associate Professor)
YAMASAKI MICHIMASA (Graduate School of Agriculture Assistant Professor)
Outline and Purpose of the Course Seminar and reading literatures on (1) biodiversity in forest ecosystems, (2) growth, reproduction and phylogeny of forest plants (3) evaluation of forest sites as habitats of wild life and (4) conservation of forests from damages by wild life.
Course Goals Understand and acquire the techniques and knowledge necessary to conduct research in forest biology, including how to conduct surveys and examine their results.
Schedule and Contents 1. Biodiversity in forest ecosystems (7-8 sessions)
Students will introduce and discuss studies that employ a molecular biological approach to analyze the biodiversity of forest ecosystems, which serve as habitats for a diverse range of living organisms.

2. Reproductive ecology of plants (7-8 sessions)
Students will introduce and discuss studies related to topics such as: plants and pollinators, sexual reproduction and reproductive strategy, the relationship between flower-bud formation/fructification and resource allocation, and seed dispersal.

3. Forests and wildlife (7-8 sessions)
Students will introduce and discuss the ecology of wildlife living in forests and the characteristics of forests as habitats, and interactions between wildlife and plants

4. Forest damage and conservation biology (7-8 sessions)
Students will introduce and discuss studies related to the mechanisms of forest damage, theories and methods of damage prevention and mitigation, basic theories of conservation biology, and wildlife management science.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Attendance and periodical (written) examination.
Course Requirements None.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are expected to prepare thoroughly for class so that they will have a full grasp of the concepts learned in the seminar and explain them to others.
