Outline and Purpose of the Course  By the presentation and discussion using research papers of international journals, knowledge about agro-environment and crop production in the tropics is acquired. In addition, students should report their own research subject. Through the discussion, they study research methods on planning, research implementation and writing research papers
Course Goals To know the newest knowledge on agriculture, agricultural ecology, agricultural systems and agricultural environment in the tropics,
to be able to discuss about agricultural production and environmental issues in the tropics, which influence global future, based on the data,
and to be able to explain clearly global scale issues on agricultural production and environment.
Schedule and Contents Agricultural production under environmental stresses (4 times)
Plant responses to major environmental stresses, i.e. drought, heat, soil salinization and waterlogging, are discussed.
Distribution and dissemination of tropical crops (4 times)
 Recent research methodologies and new knowledge on tropical crops, vegetables, fruit trees and condiments are introduced and discussed.
Farming and cropping systems and sustainable agricultural production (8 times)
 Farming and cropping systems of Southeast Asia and tropical Africa are introduced and analyzed and their sustainability and diversity are discussed.
Ecological traits of tropical crops (4 times)
 Ecological traits of various tropical crops are discussed based on recent research papers.
Discussion on students' research subjects (10 times)
 Planning, implementation and analysis of the thesis are instructed and discussed.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation is made by the record of attendance and the results of assignments.
Course Requirements Students in the Laboratory of Tropical Agriculture can take this course. Basic knowledge on tropical agriculture and stress physiology are necessary.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are expected to study beforehand. Especially, it is recommended to review the contents of "Tropical Agriculture" and "Soil Science" at the undergraduate level.

There are several opportunities for the group presentation. At that time, students are expected to discuss with the group members for the preparation.
