Outline and Purpose of the Course To promote a better understanding of vegetable and ornamental horticultural science, students are required to present a research paper report derived from more than two recent international journal articles selected by each student. The report should include background into why the topic is of interest, as well as a clear statement of the objective (s) and hypothesis (sees) tested. Following the results and discussion of each article, general discussion throughout the report and his own idea in relation to vegetable and ornamental horticulture should be stated. The presenter should answer to queries and discuss the problems in details with teachers and other participants.
Course Goals Students will develop the ability to gain a systematic understanding of several research papers and studies; explain them in relation to vegetable and ornamental horticulture; and broaden their perspectives on their research themes.
Schedule and Contents Research developments in vegetable and ornamental horticulture and related topics (30 sessions)
 Students will be asked to read a broad range of the most current international publications on topics of their interest related to vegetable and ornamental horticulture and relevant disciplines, and organize and write a report on what they have learned around a theme and present it in class. Following each presentation, the instructor will examine the significance and issues of the presentation with the class and add explanations. Each student will present three to four times during the year.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Grading will be based on an overall assessment of criteria such as attendance, the quality of presentation, and commitment to projects.
Course Requirements Basic knowledge of horticulture is required.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Prepare an outline and distribute it to the class within the set timeline. Students are required to plan and prepare thoroughly for the presentation so that they can clarify the viewpoints from which they will introduce the research papers of their choice and provide a clear explanation of the relationship between the arguments made in the papers and the discipline of vegetable and ornamental horticulture. Read other presenters’outlines in advance to gain a good grasp of the key issues and be prepared to ask questions.
