Outline and Purpose of the Course Purpose of this course is to research in functional components originated from marine organisms using chemical and molecular biological techniques.
Course Goals This course will provide students with an opportunity to develop the ability to understand how the components of marine organisms are involved in the adaption of the organisms to various environments. Students will also aim to learn the principles and applications of genetic manipulation in order to understand the functions of genes and proteins at the organism level. Another learning objective is to understand the distinguishing functions of marine organisms that make them important food sources in terms of both the molecules and the host organisms within the food.
Schedule and Contents About 3-4 weeks of classes are planned for each of the topics, including the following:

1. Physiological characteristics of marine animals and plants
2. Ecological characteristics of marine animals and plants
3. Genetic characteristics of marine animals and plants
4. Cellular characteristics of marine animals and plants
5. Environmental adaptability of marine animals and plants
6. Genetic modification of marine animals
7. Senses of marine animals
8. Biological defense mechanisms of marine animals
9. Functions of marine organisms as food
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on attendance and the quality of presentation.
Course Requirements No background knowledge is required.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are expected to thoroughly prepare for their presentation so that they will be ready to explain not only the research papers to be presented but also their background information. Students must also review any questions from the Q&A session and summarize their findings so that they can explain them to the person who had asked the question.
