Outline and Purpose of the Course This course is divided into two parts: in the first semester, lectures and discussions on methodologies of qualitative social research and in the second, reviews and discussions about contemporary English-language works on sociology of food and agriculture.
Course Goals Students will gain an understanding of the history, methods and current issues of qualitative social research.
Schedule and Contents The course will be delivered in a seminar format to provide students with an opportunity to learn and apply various techniques used in qualitative social research, with a focus on research on local communities. Textbook-like publications on qualitative social research will be used for the course. While it is subject to some change depending on the publications used, a rough outline of the course is as follows:
Sessions 1 to 3: Qualitative and quantitative research
 The significance and history of qualitative research methods
Sessions 4 to 5: Different data collection methods
 Interviews, document materials, videos
Sessions 6 to 8: Methodologies of interview surveys
 Life history, focus groups, etc.
Sessions 9 to 11: Analysis methods of qualitative survey results
 Grounded theory, etc.
Sessions 12 and 13: Qualitative social surveys and ethical issues
Session 14 and 15: Extra classes
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on class performance including contribution to presentations and discussions.
Course Requirements None.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Reading materials will be assigned in each class. Students must complete them before the next class and enhance their understanding of important concepts by reviewing reference materials after class.
