Outline and Purpose of the Course In this seminar, students will learn fundamental knowledge and the application of it to practical problems related to the sustainable use of forest resources and ecosystem services through the critical review of literatures and thesis writing.
Course Goals The target of this course is to understand the effective use of fundamental skills and knowledge for scientific research activities in the field of forest science.
Schedule and Contents Twelve topics under five themes shown below will be focuses in the seminar. For each topic, five to six weeks will be assigned. Teachers will set tasks for students and students are request to report the results.
1. Forest Ecology (by Kanzaki)
Methods of long-term monitoring of forest and analyses of forest dynamics
Methods of canopy plants survey and biodiversity analyses
2. Forest Management (by Kanzaki)
Effects of reduced impact logging and intensive management
Institutions and global mechanism for sustainable forest management
3. Forest planning (by Matsushita)
Forest planning and society
Policy development in forest planning
4. Legal system and institutions for forest and forestry (by Matsushita and Kanzaki)
Laws and governance of forest and forestry
Diversity of forest owners and their roles in forest management
Laws relating to timber and forest products
Protection forest system and related institutions
International mechanism of forest conservation
5. Forest tourism (by Matsushita)
Ecotourism: current state and its role for forest conservation
Sustainable tourism and forest
Final feedback lecture (by Kanzaki and Matsushita)
Review student achievements and give additional lecture
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluated by participation to the course, active role in training.

Course Requirements Students with fundamental knowledge on forest ecology, forest management and/or forest economy are welcome.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are requested to have scientific interest in the sustainable forest utilization. Preliminary survey on the various topic related to the sustainable forest utilization is requested.
