Outline and Purpose of the Course This course is an intermediate, graduate-level course in the field of agricultural economics. In each class, we will first review theory and empirical evidence from consumer theory, contract economics, mechanism design, impact evaluation or spatial econometrics and then examine, through economic analysis, how it can be applied to Japanese agriculture.
Course Goals The objectives of this course are (1) to obtain microeconomic knowledge and frameworks that are applicable to agricultural economics, (2) to learn how to apply microeconometric models to agricultural issues, and (3) to master statistical software (STATA) for managing and analyzing socioeconomic data.
Schedule and Contents Lectures will cover both theory and its practical application for food, agriculture and rural area. The lecture schedule is as follows:
1) Introduction (Class 1)
2) Demand Analysis (Classes 2-4)
3) Contract Theory (Classes 5-8)
4) Mechanism Design (Classes 9-11)
5) Impact Evaluation and Spatial Econometrics (Classes 12-15)
Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessment is based on contribution to class discussions, in-class exercises and the final presentation and exam.

Course Requirements Basic understanding of microeconomics (including game theory) and econometrics at the undergraduate level are required as prerequisites for this course.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students must carefully read the several journal articles assigned for each lecture in advance.
