Outline and Purpose of the Course In this course, students will learn how to carry out literature survey, field work, laboratory work, statistics survey, statistical analysis and report writing on forest ecology, management, and planning.
Course Goals The target of this course is to obtain fundamental skills and knowledge for scientific research activities in the field of forest science.
Schedule and Contents 1. Literature Survey
Methods of searching, collecting, organizing, and utilizing data on web-site, administrative materials, and historical documents, will be taught.

2. Field Work
Designing and conducting various field surveys, including ecological surveys, interview surveys of local communities or private forestry companies, and questionnaire surveys of forest owners or citizens, will be taught.

3. Laboratory work
Chemical and physical analysis of plants and soils will be taught.

4. Utilization of statistics
Methods of using statistics relating to forest and wood-based industries, including forest planning, forest management, demand and supply of forest products, price of log and forest products, will be taught. In addition, important points to be careful of when use the statistics, methods of analysis, and applications to mathematical modeling will be taught.

5. Statistical Analysis
Basic statistical concept and utilization of basic statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis, general linear model, and multivariate analysis will be taught.

6. Report writing and presentation
Training for report writing and effective presentation will be provided.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluated by participation to the course, active role in training.

Course Requirements Students with fundamental knowledge on forest ecology, forest management and/or forest economy are welcome.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Before the course, preliminary study for the methodology of analysis and/or experiments is requested. After the course, students are requested to apply them for own research activity.
