Instructor name NAKAGAWA SATOSHI (Graduate School of Agriculture Associate Professor)
Outline and Purpose of the Course Students will enhance their understanding of marine microbes by:
Gaining an overview of findings concerning the population, diversity, metabolism, and evolutionary characteristics of a wide variety of microbes living in the marine environment; and
Reading and analyzing cutting-edge original research papers and books with a focus on relevant research techniques and interactions among microbes or between microbes and large organisms, and discussing the relevant findings as well as a broad range of other topics with other students.
Course Goals Students will develop the ability to explain the ecological importance of marine microbes and their survival strategies in reference to several examples. In addition, students will understand the techniques used to research these topics.
Schedule and Contents Topics covered include the following: The time spent on each of the topics will vary from 2 to 5 weeks per topic, depending on the students’ learning progress. As a rule, the first half of the course will consist of lectures while in the second half students will discuss original research papers and relevant concepts.

1. Population and diversity of microbes living in the ocean
2. Metabolism of marine microbes and marine resources
3. Techniques for researching marine microbes
4. Symbiosis related to marine microbes
Evaluation Methods and Policy Grading will be based on a comprehensive assessment of criteria such as the student’s commitment to presentations and discussions.
