Outline and Purpose of the Course Landscape ecology of both human dominated areas as well as natural areas in order to propose better solutions to land use conflicts between man and nature. The topics included landscape planning, design and management of small gardens, urban parks, and rural and mountain areas.
Course Goals Understand the techniques used for landscape planning and examine how they can be put to practical use in our society.
Schedule and Contents  What is landscape? (1 session)
  Students will study the definition of landscape and how to collect and use relevant information. In addition, the lecture will describe laws, administrative policies, and global trends concerning the landscape environment.

 Landscape planning in urban areas (5 sessions)
 Students will learn about the planning, conservation, and use of landscape in urban areas and visit green spaces in Kyoto city. Based on what they have learned so far, students will then develop a landscape plan for the Yoshidayama area.

Landscape planning in natural parks (2 sessions)
 Students will learn about utilization and conservation plans for natural parks, and discuss possible future plans for using and conserving the natural environment.

 Landscape planning in Satoyama (woodland near populated areas) (6 sessions)
  Based on case studies on landscape planning, conservation, and utilization for Satoyama, students will conduct research on Satoyama in Kosai and develop a landscape plan.

 
Evaluation Methods and Policy  Evaluation will be based on an overall assessment of attendance, class participation and reports.
Course Requirements None.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Compile and understand existing landscape plans.
