Metabolism and its Regulation of Animals

Numbering Code G-AGR04 5DA28 LJ84 Year/Term 2022 ・ First semester
Number of Credits 2 Course Type Lecture
Target Year Target Student
Language Japanese Day/Period Fri.2
Instructor name FUNABA MASAYUKI (Graduate School of Agriculture Professor)
Outline and Purpose of the Course The goal of animal nutritional science is to determine the amount of nutrients ingested by the animal to keep health and optimal growth. To reach the goal, it is needed to understand how nutrients are digested, absorbed and metabolized. In this lecture, participants learn general aspects in mammals as well as special aspects in carnivores, omnivore and herbivores on the nutrient digestion and metabolism.
Course Goals Basic information on nutrient utilization can be understood.
Schedule and Contents 3-4 weeks of classes are planned for each of the following topics:

1) Characteristics and metabolism of proteins
Topics include the intake patterns, digestion and absorption sites, metabolism, and metabolic regulation of proteins.

2) Characteristics and metabolism of carbohydrates (sugar)
Topics include the intake patterns, digestion and absorption sites, metabolism, and metabolic regulation of carbohydrates.

3) Characteristics and metabolism of fat
Topics include the intake patterns, digestion and absorption sites, metabolism, and metabolic regulation of fat.

4) Metabolic characteristics of dogs and cats
The evolution and metabolic characteristics of dogs and cats and their differences will be discussed.

Questions will be answered during the feedback period in class.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Examination
Course Requirements None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Basic information on molecular and cellular biology is required to understand the class efficiently.
