Outline and Purpose of the Course Principles and applications of stand reconstruction technique will be discussed. It is a useful method to estimate changes in structure of forest over the years.
Course Goals Understanding hypotheses and principles of the stand reconstruction technique is the purpose of this course. Aquiring ability to apply this technique for analyses is also the aim.
Schedule and Contents Three lectures will be done for each of the following themes. Students are expected to present contents of papers as a seminar format, followed by class discussions. This course is a part of "Special Course in Agricultural Sciences" and lectures may be given in English language. Students presentations may be done in Japanese as well.
(1) Development of forest structure and arcaeological reconstruction techniques (1-3 weeks)
(2) Theory of tree size distribution (4-6 week)
(3) Application of tree-size distribution theory to structural stand reconstruction (7-9 weeks)
(4) Improvement of the stand reconstruction technique (10-12 weeks)
(5) Application of the stand reconstruction technique to forest growth analysis (13-15 weeks)
Instructor will answer questions during the feedback period.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Grading will be based on an overall assessment of criteria such as class participation as demonstrated by the student’s contribution to class discussions or the like, and presentations on academic articles.

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Reading relevant papers for the subject of each lecture will be required.
References, etc. Necessary materials will be distributed in the class.
