Outline and Purpose of the Course Both function and structure, that agricultural ecosystem has, are explained in point of both biochemistry, that concludes biological elements, and physical chemistry, that concludes non-biological elements.
Course Goals Understand the structures and functions of agro-ecosystems from physiological and biochemical perspectives, which involve biological elements, and physicochemical perspectives, which involve non-biological elements, while comparing them to the structures and functions of natural ecosystems.
Schedule and Contents 1-3 weeks of classes (lectures and seminars) are scheduled for each of the topics covered in class, including the following:

I. Natural ecosystems and history of farming

II. Agro-ecosystems and their characteristics

III. Soil as a medium in terrestrial ecosystems

IV. Matter production in plants and environmental factors

V. Plant water relations and cycles in ecosystems

VI. Absorption of inorganic nutrients by plants and cycles in ecosystems

VII. Functions and ecology of animals as consumers; functions and ecology of consumers in paddy ecosystems

VIII. Functions and ecology of soil microbes (decomposers)

The course content may be modified depending on the students’ learning progress.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on reports and attendance.
Course Requirements It is desirable that students have taken Plant Production I and II.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students must prepare a report based on the materials distributed during class and submit it by the end of next class. Students are encouraged to review the handouts thoroughly and further examine any issues or problems they encounter in their studies independently.
