Outline and Purpose of the Course Teaches the current status and issues on agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa, where people seriously suffer from the vicious cycle of environmental degradation and poverty/hunger. Students will learn approach to achieve increase in food production and conservation of the environment. They also learn agriculture and environment in Southeast Asia and Japan and reflect on the role of agricultural research.
Course Goals Understand the current state of and challenges confronting agriculture in Africa and be aware of our responsibilities.
Schedule and Contents For a total of 15 sessions, 1-3 sessions will be spent on each of the following topics;
1. Outline of soil degradation
2. Ecological conditions and agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa
3. The current situation of and countermeasures against desertification in Sahel
4. The slash-and-burn method in semi-arid woodlands in Southern Africa
5. Development and agriculture: future challenges
6. Future perspectives on agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa
7. Agriculture and environment in Southeast Asia and Japan
Evaluation Methods and Policy Grading will be based on an overall assessment of attendance and two types of reports.
