Outline and Purpose of the Course Tree architecture and wood sutructure are closely related, and affect trees' life-style. In this lecture, clasical and recent work relating the topic wil be introduced.
Schedule and Contents Following topics will be lectured one or two times.

1.Origine of land plants and evolution of woody plants.
2.Evolution of vascular tissue.
3.Water transport in woody tissue:Tension-Cohesion Theory vs. Multi-Force Watergate Theory.Embolism caused by drought and freeze-thaw cycle, and adaptation to embolism.
4.Ring- and diffuse-porous tree species: Wood anatomical definition and functional re-definition.
5.Wood density:An indication of physiological function?
6.Maximun tree height.
7.Pipe model theory of tree form.
8.Wood structure and tree architecture.
9.Functional group and their use of resources.
10.Leaf venation: Variation and ecological significance.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Class grade will be assigned base on 50% class attendance and participation, 50% on work assignment.
