Outline and Purpose of the Course There are a variety of biologically active compounds which regulate the bioenergetic systems such as mitochondrial respiratory enzymes and transporters. This course addresses the syntheses and the action mechanisms of such chemicals synthesized in our laboratory. We will focus a close relationship between organic chemistry and biology.
Course Goals Understand the action mechanisms of biologically active compounds from the perspective of organic chemistry.
Schedule and Contents Topics include the following:

Sessions 1 to 3: Hideto Miyoshi
Organic chemical synthesis and action mechanisms of inhibitors acting on respiratory chain electron transport enzymes
Example: Analyze the inhibitor-binding site of NADH-quinone oxidoreductase, a large membrane enzyme (with a molecular weight of approx. 1 MDa), using protoaffinity labeling.

Sessions 4 and 5: Masatoshi Murai
Organic chemical synthesis of quinones and their physiological roles
Example: Investigate the intracellular traffic of quinones using a quinone probe.

Sessions 6 and 7: Masato Abe
Organic chemical synthesis of phospholipid cardiolipins and their physiological roles
Example: Conduct a biochemical research on cardiolipins by preparing cardiolipins through probe synthesis.

Feedback:
Instructors will be available in their offices during the feedback period to answer questions from students.
The course will be delivered over two days, from 1st to 6th period on a Monday, and from 1st to 2nd period on a Tuesday.
Evaluation Methods and Policy While grading will be based on reports and attendance, the student’s commitment to projects will also be taken into account.
Course Requirements No background knowledge is required.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Key points to be reviewed will be specified during class.
