Outline and Purpose of the Course Basic information on enzyme sciences important to understanding microbial physiology and metabolism will be presented. Application of enzymes and microorganisms will be explained together with supporting technologies such as gene technology, enzyme technology, molecular breeding, and cellular biotechnology.
Course Goals Students will get the basic knowledge of enzyme sciences and acquire how to analyze and apply the function of microorganisms.
Schedule and Contents Topics in the field of enzyme sciences will be presented.
- Sciences in microbial enzymology (Ogawa, Kurihara, Inoue) (1-2 lectures)
Extraction and purification
Kinetic analysis
Organic chemistry in enzyme and coenzyme chemistry
Protein engineering and molecular evolution for enzyme modification
Industrial use of enzymes
- Microbial physiology (Kurihara) (3-4 lectures)
Environmental effects and adaptation strategy
- Microbial metabolisms (Ogawa) (5-6 lectures)
Productions of amino acids, nucleic acids, lipids, vitamin, antibiotics
- Microbial signaling (Inoue) (7-8 lectures)
Molecular mechanism of signal transduction and gene expression control
