Outline and Purpose of the Course | This class is an easy introductory course to Luganda. Luganda is one of the Bantu languages that are spoken in a very large area of Africa. Luganda is a widely spoken language in Uganda, with more than 8 million native speakers. It has been estimated that nearly 70% of Ugandans (32 million people) can communicate in Luganda. In this course students will learn basic Luganda pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and phrases that would be useful for someone conducting fieldwork, volunteering, or working in Buganda society. The purpose of the course is to learn the practical Luganda language. Also, the cultural characteristics of Buganda society, daily life, values, and modern times. Lectures will also be given on the observable social trends in Uganda. | |||
Course Goals |
To learn and practice basic Luganda pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, common phrases, and develop the ability to hold simple conversations. In addition, students will be able to understand basic information about contemporary trends in Ugandan society. |

Schedule and Contents |
The class will be given weekly on Thursdays during the 3rd period. 1. The Luganda alphabet; syllables and pronunciation 2. Greetings 3. Expressing feelings, interests, and needs 4. (Review test 1) Essential pronouns and “To Be” 5. Numbers/counting 6. Some standard questions 7. Some common words 8. (Review test 2) Going places 9. Shopping 10. Verb conjugation: present tense, 11. Time and Date 12. (Review test 3) Sentence construction, 13. Seemingly similar words 14. To love and beyond 15. Feedback |

Evaluation Methods and Policy | Evaluation will be based on the learner’s performance in the 3 review tests (75%, each is 25%) and final examination (25%). These review tests will be conducted at the beginning of the 3rd class, the 8th class and the 12th class respectively. | |||
