Outline and Purpose of the Course |
Nepalese is the national language of Nepal. In addition to being the official language of the Indian state of Sikkim, there are many speakers in other Indian states and in other locations such as Bhutan and Myanmar. In recent years, the number of Nepalese speakers living in Japan has reached about 100,000. Nepalese literature developed greatly after the 19th century. Publication of newspapers, magazines, and books in Nepalese is also active. This class is intended for students studying in Nepalese-speaking countries or who use Nepalese for their research. The class aims to improve the Nepalese reading ability of such students. |
Course Goals |
To enable students to acquire the Nepalese language reading skills necessary for conducting research and to use Nepalese language materials when preparing papers. |
Schedule and Contents |
Literature to be read in the class will be determined through consultation between the intructor and the participants, taking into account the participants' levels of proficiency and research interests. In each lesson, participants will read aloud from assigned sections and present a draft translation. Fifteen classes will be held. |

Class attendance and active participation. |
Course Requirements |
Basic proficiency in Nepalese. |
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) |
Read and understand the required text selections before each class. Preparations for each class is expected to take between two and three hours. |
