Outline and Purpose of the Course In this course, we will learn the basic perspectives on Peace and War in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as actual cases in the 20th and 21st centuries. We will also focus on the refugee issue in the region. It is because the contemporary refugee issue started in the Middle East and the region continues to create new flows of refugees and displaced persons today.
Course Goals The objectives are: To understand the issues related to peace and war in the Middle East from both historical and contemporary perspectives, and to examine actual cases in order to understand the political, economic and social conditions behind these conflicts as well as military confrontations, ceasefires and peace processes, and to contemplate on the possibilities for prospective peaceful co-existence.
Schedule and Contents Main Topics:
(1) Basic terms and concepts (1 week)
- Early Islamic States and Jihad
- Islamic International Law of Siyar

(2) Mechanisms of peace and war (3-4 weeks)
- International system and Regional Conflicts
- Impact of the two world wars
- Conflicts embedded in the "peace" after the two world wars
・Armed struggle, terrorism and low-intensity conflicts

(3) War/Conflict in the Middle East (5-6 weeks)
- Middle East Wars from the first to the fourth
- Middle East Peace Processes
- Lebanese Civil War and Lebanon War
- Iran-Iraq War
- Gulf War and Iraq War
- Syrian War

(4) Refugees and Humanitarianism (4-5 weeks)
- Genesis of the Refugee Problem and Its Transformation
- The UN and the Refugees
- The Refugee Problem Today and Practical Issues of Relief and Support
- Islamic NGOs/Charity
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on Weekly Attendance and Active Participation and Assignments.
Course Requirements If you haven't studied Middle Eastern Politics and International Relations, you are advised to take "Contemporary Middle East and North Africa" in this semester, though it is not compulsory.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Please read, study and contemplate on the resources in the fields as much as possible. Recommended resources will be suggested in the class.
Textbooks Textbooks/References The textbooks are in Japanese. If you have difficulties to deal with them, alternative readings will be provided.
References, etc. Printed outlines and necessary resource will be distributed in the class.
