Outline and Purpose of the Course Japanese companies show several unique mechanism from organizational perspective. To consider management of organizations, it is necessary to understand their mechanisms. Organizational theory attempts to provide a basic viewpoints to organizational management in business administration. An organization has the characteristics of a system comprising cooperative activities of the human structure called a business. It has unique mechanisms as a human structure and operates not only economically but also socially and psychologically with respect to decision-making, motivation, leadership, organizational culture, inter-company cooperation, and organizational reform. We aim to study this.
Course Goals Through this class, students will acquire the following:
(1) Basic knowledge of the mechanisms of organizations.
(2) Basic understanding of how to manage organizational activities based on this knowledge.
(3) Understanding of how to manage the improvement and innovation of organizational activities.
Schedule and Contents (Class plan and content)
In this class, we will focus on the macroscopic dimensions of corporate organizations, particularly their overall structure and inter-business networks. We will discuss the interactions between the business environment and organizational structure, bureaucratic and network organizations, organizational capacity for innovation and learning, and organizational characteristics of Japanese management. Our study of these areas will reveal the characteristics of human organizations in areas such as decision-making, knowledge management, and innovation of Japanese companies. Japanese companies are undergoing a major transformation in terms of their structure because of globalization, information technology, aging, and other changes in the business environment. Classes on the following topics will be conducted over one to two weeks:
1. Perspectives of organization theory

3. Organizational learning
4. Motivation and performance-orientation
5. Leadership
6. Business environment and organizational structure
7. Basic organizational design
8. Network organization
9. Organizational longevity
10. Organizational culture
11. Organizational change
12. Internationalization of organizations
13. Politics of organizations
Evaluation Methods and Policy Grading will be based on the student's understanding of various concepts in organization theory. Considering the partial or full implementation of online instruction because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we will carry out the following using PandA:
・Comprehension test for each class (to be completed within two weeks after the class) 30%
・Midterm comprehension test 30%
・Final report 40%.
Course Requirements Students are requested to take Introduction to Business Administration.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) ・Students should definitely take "Introduction to Business Administration." It is preferable that students take "Management Strategy."
・The class materials will be posted on KULASIS etc., in advance. Students should prepare using these materials.
・Related literature will be introduced. Students should make sure to read the recommended literature.
