Outline and Purpose of the Course | Labor economics is a field of economics that studies the workings of the labor market, and aims primarily at understanding the determination of employment and wages. In this course, we consider the meaning of working, hiring, earning, schooling, moving, and discriminating from economic perspectives. In doing so, students learn theory, evidence, and applications in modern labor economics. | ||
Course Goals | Upon successful completion of the course, the student would be able to understand the determination of wages and employment, interpret basic facts about the labor market, and evaluate the role of public policies in the labor market. | ||
Schedule and Contents |
From Weeks 1 to 7, we overview the principles of supply and demand in competitive markets to evaluate the impact of the tax and transfer system, the minimum wage, the employment protection legislation, and immigration on employment and wages. From Weeks 8 to 15, we consider monopsony, job characteristics, human capital, labor mobility, and discrimination to understand the nature and causes of wage differentials.
