Instructor name BUN SEIICHI (Graduate School of Economics Professor)
Outline and Purpose of the Course Read textbooks on urban or transport economics, or new books on related topics.
Urban and transport economics both focus on location and space, a feature not found in other economics disciplines. In the seminar, we will deepen our understanding of the contents of the text while actively asking and answering questions on the basic literature. We will also ask and answer questions on how to deal with specific real-world problems regarding cities and transportation from an economic viewpoint. Think about whether you will be able to provide an answer to these questions.
For example, urban and transport economics deal with the following problems:
・ How will the national land structure change when the Shinkansen and highways are developed?
・ The effects of highway tolls
・ Policies to alleviate traffic congestion in cities
・ Will decentralization ease the population concentration in Tokyo?
・ Competition between infrastructure such as airports and ports, etc.
See the following websites for details on past seminars: http://www.econ.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~mun/semi.html
Course Goals Acquire basic knowledge of urban and transport economics and prepare for group research in the seminars in the second half of the course.
