Outline and Purpose of the Course The aim of this seminar is to help students develop an understanding of strategic management. To this end, we will be conducting a systematic and concrete examination of this field, from its theoretical foundations to its actual application. Our primary focus will be on considering business and corporate strategy as well as corporate governance.
Course Goals This seminar aims to foster future talent who possess a global mindset. In order to help nurture an international perspective, our study of strategic management will cover not only Japanese businesses, but also international businesses.
Schedule and Contents In this class, we will be systematically examining the theories and analytical tools used in strategic management, from the five-forces framework of Michael Porter, to the resource-based framework. We shall also be covering corporate governance, discussing current problems while comparing Japanese and international firms. Based on this broad theme, I will be deciding on the concrete contents of the seminar after consulting with the attending students. It is therefore essential that participants have an keen interest in business administration. Within the context of this general orientation, seminar students will be able to freely choose topics of investigation, and conduct research in groups or individually. Presentations will then be given during seminar hours. Furthermore, students will have the chance to deepen their understanding by reading actual business cases by Harvard Business School, and also proactively conducting company visits when possible.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Students will be receiving an overall evaluation based on several factors, including their attendance, proactive participation in class discussions, and the contents and form of their presentations.
Course Requirements There are no particular prerequisites in terms of the completion of certain units with respect to the contents. However, a certain level of English proficiency would be necessary. Furthermore, students should generally have a keen interest in business administration, and a proactive attitude toward contributing to the seminar proceedings.
