Outline and Purpose of the Course In order to create new value, it is necessary to understand how society is changing and “designing culture.” If we merely focus on designing something, which is superior in terms of function, price, ease of use, or aesthetics; then, it would be difficult to create a level of value, which could seriously capture people’s attention. Accordingly, this seminar seeks to help students learn how to read and speak about the shifts in society, and how to design new cultural products on their own. For this purpose, we will be focusing on reading fundamental theories about society, while at the same time engaging in actually designing new cultural products.
Course Goals 1. Understanding basic thinking regarding culture. 2. Developing the ability to understand society through reading foundational texts. 3. Acquiring an understanding of the methodology of culture design.
Schedule and Contents Design Project
Students will have to decide upon a theme, and develop the research design as a team. Students will also be carrying out ethnographic studies, ideation, prototyping, etc.

Discussion Relating to Design
Students will be able to deepen their understanding of design while reading a number of related texts.

Research on Culture
Students will be studying various theories about culture and conducting analyses of cultural elements such as services that they are familiar with from their daily lives. Building upon the above study, they will also be discussing the connotations of design.
Evaluation Methods and Policy I will be evaluating the degree of the students understanding of topics discussed during the seminar. As necessary, I will be carrying out simple exams or assigning reports to be submitted. At the same time, I will be evaluating participation in team-based investigations, as well as the results achieved.
