Outline and Purpose of the Course This course is intended for people involved in corporate planning/business development, entrepreneurship, investment/evaluation, consultation, and those who wish to enter the Graduate School of Management. The aim for students is to learn the outline of innovation management centered on Silicon Valley in North America and to be able to make practical applications.
Course Goals To understand the basics of innovation mechanisms centered on Silicon Valley in North America, with a sense of purpose.
Schedule and Contents 1. Historical, geographical, and cultural conditions that create innovation:
 Overview the activities of innovative companies (Apple, Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc.) and analyze the factors behind their development.
2. Facebook and a small-world network: With examples of Facebook, a social networking service, the success factors of innovation and the rules of thumb (a small-world network) behind them are explained.
3. Amazon.com, eBay, and power law: Using e-commerce sites such as Amazon.com and eBay as examples, the success factors of innovation and the rules of thumb (power law) behind them are explained.
4. Business model of internet distribution services such as Google: Outline the business models with examples of Google's AdWords, AdSense, etc. The relationship with the two-sided market (multi-sided market) is also explored.
5. Valuation of intellectual property and intangible assets: Outline intellectual property/patent strategies including business method patents, and evaluation methods of corporate value.
6. Investment and innovation in venture capital: Investment models, venture capital practices, risk management, due diligence, etc. are explained.
7. Organization and management mindset: Entrepreneurial characteristics, retention strategies, business ethics, etc. are explained.
8. Methods of generating ideas: Methods of generating ideas, such as brainstorming and backcasting are explained.
9. ~ 11. Business plan formulation exercises: Reading roadmap, SEC / 10-K report, etc. to formulate a business plan. The main points of the presentation method are explained, and students work on exercises and engage in discussions.
12. ~ 13. New trends in innovation ? Open innovation and service innovation:
Overview the current situation and future prospects in the advanced information and service society of the 21st century, such as the sharing economy.
14. Summary: The overall summary of the business incubation is rearranged and explained.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Class attendance/participation status (20%), report assignments (30%), final exam (50%).
However, if a student, who is planning to take the final exam, did not attend 1/3 or more of the total number of classes without prior approval, they will automatically receive a grade of “Did not pass the course.”
