Outline and Purpose of the Course In order to sustainably utilize forest resources, which are renewable, it is essential to develop infrastructure, such as the road network. However, construction work, such as building a road network, comes with a maintenance/management cost, in addition to the development cost, and there is a risk of collapse. In this course, lectures on the systems, planning, design, and construction of forest roads, forestry-dedicated roads, and forest work roads will be delivered, with some seminars. The course also provides comments on Cable logging systems.
Course Goals To acquire the knowledge and skills to plan and design road networks that take economy, environment, and society into account, and to develop the ability to draft an infrastructure development plan and a resource utilization plan in order to sustainably use forest resources in diverse forests while making the most of their characteristics.
Schedule and Contents The course is delivered as a series of intensive lectures (1 credit), as listed below:
1. The necessity of forest road networks and road density
2. The geometric structure of forest roads
3. Designing forest roads
4. The properties of soil and road maintenance
5-6. Designing forest roads (seminar)
7. Cable logging systems
8. Feedback
Evaluation Methods and Policy 【Assessment method】
Assessment is based on the report mark (70%) and attitude (30%)

A report will be assigned when all the lectures have been completed. Attitude is assessed based on attendance and the mini reports that are assigned in every other lecture.
