Outline and Purpose of the Course This course reviews natural polymers of biological origin and synthetic polymers of petroleum origin from the viewpoint of organic chemistry. Important sequential polymerization methods such as polycondensation (condensation polymerization), polyaddition and addition condensation, and chain polymerization methods such as addition polymerization (radical polymerization and ionic polymerization) and ring-opening polymerization are taught with a focus on reaction mechanisms. Additionally, nucleic acids, proteins, polysaccharides, and natural rubber, which are important biopolymers, are reviewed.
Course Goals To understand the characteristics of the chemical structures of various polymers.
To understand the mechanism of polymerization.
To understand the differences between natural and synthetic polymers and between small and large molecules.

Evaluation will be based on both the final examination (written) (about 85% weightage) and class performance (quizzes) (about 15% weightage).

Course Requirements Nothing in particular
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Quizzes will be conducted during class, but they may also be given as homework. If students prepare and review the content of the lectures, quiz assignments, and homework subjects, they will be able to learn the basics of polymer chemistry in a wide range of areas and ultimately improve their comprehensive understanding of polymer science. You can improve your understanding of specialized polymer chemistry not by only reading textbooks but by writing out the reaction mechanism by yourself.
