Outline and Purpose of the Course To learn the structure of substances essential for understanding vital phenomena and biochemistry.
Course Goals To acquire the basic ability to explain biology in the language of chemistry. To understand the characteristics of amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, and major biological components and express through in structural formulae.
Schedule and Contents Lectures will cover the following topics:
1. Introduction to biochemistry, 2 lectures
2. Water, 1 lecture
3. Amino acids and proteins, 4 lectures
4. Carbohydrates, 3 lectures
5. Lipids, 3 lectures
6. Coenzymes and vitamins, 1 lecture

 Final examination scores (60% weightage) and class performance evaluation (40% weightage)
 Class performance is evaluated based on quiz scores and attendance.

Course Requirements It is advisable, but not compulsory, to have taken chemistry in high school.
